Abstract

This article is introduced by a short discussion of the Intermediary Organization of the skeleton followed by a description of the surgical procedure used to obtain a bone specimen from the ilium near the anterior superior spine. Bone labeling with tissue markers is described along with undecalcified processing. Important histomorphometric variables are defined, histologic criteria for diagnoses are laid out, and indications and uses of the biopsy are described.
